Chronic kidney disease (CKD), also known as chronic renal disease, is a progressive loss of renal function over a period of months or years. The leading causes of CKD are uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and hypertension.
The symptoms of worsening kidney function are non-specific, and patients may not experience any symptoms until very late stage. Often, chronic kidney disease is diagnosed as a result of screening of people known to be at risk of kidney problems, such as those with high blood pressure or diabetes and those with a blood relative with chronic kidney disease.
Diet in Chronic Kidney Disease
You may need to make changes to your diet when you have chronic kidney disease. This depends upon the stage of CKD but for instance:
- Limiting fluids
- Eating a low-protein diet
- Limiting salt, potassium, phosphorus
- Getting enough calories if you are losing weight
You may need to alter your diet more if your kidney disease gets worse, or if you need dialysis.
The purpose of diet is to keep the levels of electrolytes, minerals and fluid in your body balanced when you have chronic kidney disease or are on dialysis. Those people who are not on dialysis need a special diet to limit the buildup of waste products in the body.
